Here we go again ... ;D I am back from this monster of fest from Monday but for variety of reasons i dint really have time or energy to write down any kind of report. So I will attempt it now ...

Anyway .... there was one innovation for me : for the first time I took a "travel agency" to take me there on bus ... yeah, the notorious OZZY and POTKAN (=rat) from Pilsen .... they have been around for years organizing car / mini van / coach trips to gigs and festivals over Europe (esp. Germany, Austria, Netherlands, Belgium i think ...).

So anyway, since the WFF fest was somewhere behind Leipzig (small airport 40 km from Leipzig) and since it is basically in the middle of nowhere and the only way to stay at the gig was in the camp site, I thought it would be more convenient to go on an organized tour. I was actually right, though for a moment i felt a bit awkward mixing up with groups of people who already knew each other and toured with ozzy for years ... ;D

But anyway, couple of days before the departure i learned we would be leaving Prague on Thursday before midnight ... i panicked a bit as to what i still had to do at work before that day ... in result i did actually all the deadlined work on Monday / in one day ;D ... quite typical ! ::)

We arrived to the fest locality around 7 am .... surprise surprise ... the gates / camp opened around noon ;D ... so we were standing there, fest site in the distance,

people relaxing in the fields ... and we "chicks" tried not to think of "ladies" room and our dare need ... guys obviously just happily ran around the field pissing wherever they found it comfy enough to do so. ::) After some hours of waiting i just went to the nearest security post and inquired about a "piss house" ... and was directed to one of those dixies / mobile toilets standing out of the camp .... geeez what a relief ;D ... you could notice change in the ladies faces after that discovery !

Having described this, this pre-discovery stage was perhaps the only really unpleasant moment of the whole trip !!!! :D .... well, safe for the fest security' twisted obsession with pixels on your camera ... but on that later !

As for the fest programme, it was mostly more extreme forms of metal, hard core, some punk ... for most part, all excellent stuff ! Hats off to the organizers. 8-)

Our first steps led to the camp ... sure enough it was raining .... it was raining for all of Friday and part of Saturday. In this regards it is interesting to note that i did actually consult several servers for weather forecasts and each of them came up with almost totally different view on the matter. The probability guess of mine was that it would be entirely fucked up weather and to some extend i was right. At least for Friday.

The tents were up and we went for the gates. On the way there these were actually the only kind of shots i took on Friday ... btw. our tent stations were behind that Brazilian flag ... quite a good signpost when dark.

Now ... when at the gates, i got searched, the lady took out my camera and checked for megapixels .... said 6.1 are too much ma'am ... only 2.5 megapixels are allowed in !!!! >:( JfC ... i never heard this shit before : I mean, if i had a normal film camera with high speed film like 800 ASA or more, she would know shit and I would take much better shots than with any non-professional digi cam plus even in dark if I got those film rolls over-exposed, i would get brilliant shots .... yet she had the order : 2.6 megapixels max ... and on that day (perhaps weakened by too few toilet breaks on the way) i just gave up and wasnt cool enough to go to the other gates and try to smuggle it in there .... ::)

Oh well ... it was raining, relatively dark anyway ... so i just hanged arpund the fest area, camera-less, and enjoyed music ... which wasnt that bad after all.

SPAWN (Germ)
http://www.spawn666.de

German death metal from Berlin ... I came late to their gig due to the camera issue and i couldnt concentrate properly on them so my memory is kinda faint when it comes to Spawn .... the only thing i can remember is that i actually wasnt upset about hat i heard from the stage. ;D

EXTREME NOISE TERROR (England)

Grindcore ... they were really good ... it was not exactly extreme noise terror to me given the state of mind i had for the afternoon ... but then i may not have been objective ... but from what i remember i have to check out some of their releases. ... actually amazon announces re-release of their 2 albums on one CD "Holocaust in Your Head/in It for Life" in a couple of days ...

CATARACT (Switzerland)
http://www.cataract.cc

Metalcore / Now they played in the tent stage, i just went there in the break ... and these swiss guys were fucking excellent !!!!!! I was really taken by what i heard and in the breaks i was crusing the markets trying to get hold of some of their CDs which I finally managed and got With Triumph Comes Loss

I will gladly see them any time again !!!

From their gig i ran back to the main stage to check out

MASTODON (USA)
http://www.mastodonrocks.com

Thrash/HC from Atlanta .... very good show, but lets say I liked Cataract better ... but again, if they play nearby / at a similar gig, i will go and see them again !

OBITUARY (USA)
http://www.obituary.cc

Death/thrash ... whatever ... they were great !!!! [image] they really made the field dancing and headbanging ... and actually I may see them one more time this summer ! ;D

ANTI FLAG (USA)
http://www.anti-flag.com

Yeah right ... punk's not dead ! ... anarcho / polit. punk .... music wise not bad, content-wise acceptable. ;D I actually wanted to see them live so I did.

Another band I wanted to see were

KILLSWITCH ENGAGE (USA)
http://www.killswitchengage.com

Thrash /HC ... again, not bad and i am glad i checked them out. The same applies to :

IN FLAMES (Sweden)
http://www.inflames.com

Btw: all those bands i listed i saw for the first time, in some cases i obviously knew them from CDs and stuff (like DVDs / Roadrunner video samples etc.) ... but to see them live is quite a different matter and i may actually venture to say that they were more fun to see live than to listen to from the "cans" as it were ....

There is however one more point .... i was dead tired (no sleep on the bus and little sleep the night before / Soulfly-VR-Black Sabbath concert in Prague) and i could hardly stand on my feet .... also the pressure started to be a bit unbearable (the fest is said to have had something between 35 and 40.000 people) so i did wait for SLAYER ( http://www.slayer.net ) but to be honest with you, I was slowly leaving towards the camp before they actually finished. There is also one more thing : the sound for Slayer was not all that great for some reason ... they sounded like from some playback and I had a feeling i saw better Slayer gigs than this one plus Slayer shall play venue in Prague this summer .... and thus i just retreated to my tent.

I do regret i didnt find the strength to see the tent past-midnight gigs, but i simply was not able to .... age was perhaps getting on me on that night.

Well, perhaps next time somewhere else. ::)

Be it as it may, I had some good sleep regardless of the wet tent ... and yes, some distant neighbours played old Sepultura very loud, which was actually nice ... :D

For some reason though the camp repertoir changed a bit during the next two days into something more ... erm .... German. ;D You know that kind of music from Bavaria / Tyrol ? ::) ;D

SATURDAY

We woke up into rain again ... This is what i saw from my tent when courage was found to open it ;D

There is one more thing, i woke up with the firm intention to give it a try and to smuggle in my camera ... i hate dull, absurd bans and orders you see. ;D

And yeah, i actually did manage .... it was neatly packed and in few minutes it was in. ;D

So here we go ... tour bus fellows from Slovakia and Prague :

and also, the sun started climbing up ... the rain turned into heat and i got (like many others) sunburnt in an instant ! and thus we got watered by the firefighters cisterns ... it was alright only that the water was somewhat stickier than beer i got sprayed over number of times at the Wasted .... geez i looked terrible after those couple of days ;D

oh yeah, sure thing : thanks to the cisterns it came to mud-wrestling too !!!

oh btw. on breaks they had some previews on the screen ... so inter alia we got samples of the upcoming Motorhesad double DVD .... guys it looks and sounds terrific !!!

RED HARVEST (Norw.)
http://www.redharvest.com
Norwegian "extreme metal" ... they were alright, but I rather followed the gig "secondarily" browsing the Metal market tent ... I left the tent to see, 3rd time June/July ;D :

BETZEFER (Israel)
http://www.betzefer.com

Sure I knew the gig and everything .... but they are pretty good so it was a treat to see them again ... they apparently went back to Israel from Leipzig since they announced this to be their last Euro gig this summer.

The stage was getting ready for these Canadian death (?) metalists ...

KATAKLYSM (Canada)
http://www.kataklysm.net

and we got watered again. ;D

Katasklysm were brilliant : again my first time seeing them, and perhaps not the last one ... they provoked lots of serious headbanging from the start.

Speaking of which I have a QUESTION to all the experts on the boards : does the history record any injury caused by it ? ;D ... I mean if i really went this wild, i am pretty sure i would break my fucking neck (or at least dislocate couple of discs) very soon ! [image] . Plus there were much wilder instances of headbanging than took by my camera !

Anyway, in the metal market i got their CD Serenity in Fire (bands like this shall be supported ! :D ) :

... and in the breaks ... siesta in the sun :D

AMEN (USA)
http://www.comaamerica.com

The next band were nu metal / punk etc. pissed off act from New York ... they were ok, yet i was having my late lunch so i didnt really concentrate .... ::)

Yet the next band from Hungary really kicked my ass !!!!!! I didnt hear of them before really ... or i didnt pay attemtion. Whatever ... i will from now on :

EKTOMORF (Hungary)
http://www.ektomorf.com

This thrashcore band is said to be under the influence of Soulfly ... i would rather say they are under extreme influence of Max Cavalera - the guitar, the voice, the content .... but they were fucking brilliant !!!! They really put the crowd up on our fucking feet.

These shots are taken from the band site:

And in my view, they did deserve this attention. I got their first album (Destroy) at the Nuclear Blast tent and then bought their latest one (Instinct) when back in Prague :

[image] [image]

SUCH A SURGE (Germany)
http://www.suchasurge.de

The German Such a Surge are some kind of crossover ... again, alright enough to spend some time checking them out. I have got their CD single for free at Nuclear Blast tent ... sounds a bit too much pop to me though.

SICK OF IT ALL (USA)
http://www.sickofitall.com

Old good hard core. Saw them several times ... and it is always good to "meet them" as it were.

They did lots of old good hard core stuff, incl. "split the pit and make one huge mosh" thing while "complaining" about other bands copying this ritual .... which was kind of funny for it is exactly what did I think Pro Pain (?) the next day ... ;D

BEATSTEAKS (Germany)
http://www.beatsteaks.com

This "partypunk" - whatever that means - were good fun. Some people were surprise to see them set ose one of the main headliners, but after lots of HC, speed stuff they were perhaps meant to relax the people a bit ... there was some pogo stuff going on ... I think i must check out their lyrics for i feel i got only half the message ... which reminds me, i shall really do something about my German .... it is sick to have such a poor active knowledge as i do. ;D

Btw. they pulled one guy out of crowd and sat him behind the drum kit to play with them ... i dont know ... that guy was brilliant so he really felt like a professional ... be it as it may, he left the staqe aboard the "boat of honour" ;D

And then the IM to close the main stage shows

IRON MAIDEN (UK)
http://www.ironmaiden.com

I must confess, first time i saw IM live was back at Reading Rock in 1980 ... and that was also the last time for the next 25 years ... i have never followed them really, though i did listen to their music now and then.

The show was big but i must admit, i was a bit bored ... so again, before the end i just went back to the camp ... this time they could be heard fairly well all across tha place anyway!

Back in the camp we were caught by huge fireworks ... i didnt take pix of the official ones - they were kind of unexpected really .... but then from the other side of the camp started another long series - perhaps "home made" but still quite impressive ! :D

SUNDAY

In the morning we were partly packing for the bus shall leave at 2.30 am on Monday, i.e. exactly after the last gig ... The heat was becoming terrible, so i left my tent up so that people may take it as a shelter during the day ... after all, these tents are easy to pack even in utter dark. Before the gates opened we found shelter in the tent-bar ... but it was still extremely hot everywhere plus the sun was really blinding.

You can also tell, we were a bit worn out already. ;D

Btw, in the morning we learnt that Motorhead had to cancel the concluding show at WFF / main stage ... the reason was Lemmy' collapse ... what i got from people's reaction, it was mostly sincere concern rather than being upset about the gig cancellation .... everyone knows that Motorhead tend to play "behind the grave" so if a gig is cancelled, tøhe reason behind was taken as a no light matter really.

I again managed to smuggle the camera in, though this time it was narrow ... i managed to pack it invisibly, but the lady next to me had bad luck ... too many megapixels ::) ... they were really sick with this ... if they checked the zoom and flesh performance, i would perhaps take it ...

SUPERBUTT (Hungary)
http:// www.superbutt.net

I almost missed this Hungarian nu metal / crossover thing for i was browsing the CD shops around the arena. So I cannot tell really ...

DEW-SCENTED (Germany)
http://www.dew-scented.de

but this thrash gig really kicked my ass. They were absolutely brilliant and i will gladly see them again. For the time being i bought one of their albums (Issue VI), but am about to add some more soon.

After this sound massacre, we again took a well-deserved rest.

Btw. a not on dresses : hell lot of Scottish kilts around ! ;D

DIE APOKALYPTISCHEN REITER (G)
http://www.reitermania.de

And then came the AR ... i knew of them from CD shops but never really heard them ... again, a good black metal / fun out fit for a live gig !

NUCLEAR ASSAULT (USA)
http://www.nuclearassault.us

An old good thrash ... they were fine and i am really glad i saw them after all those years. As a matter of fact they announced a new / upcoming release after some 15 (?) years !!

RAGING SPEEDHORN (UK)
http://www.ragingspeedhorn.co.uk

A nu metal band with two lead singers ... pretty ass-kicking stuff i must say. :D

and btw. pretty nig mosh was formed ...

PRO PAIN (USA)
http://www.pro-pain.com

And then came Pro Pain ... now this is the band i really wanted to see live at long last, and they did not fail any expectation .... they were fantastic .... if this thing would be the only one i would saw during WFF i would still feel happy :D Needless to say, the whole arena went mad ...

after this everyone felt relaxed ! ;D

THE HELLACOPTERS (Sweden)
http://www.hellacopters.com

errr .... rock, punk, cover stuff (e.g. MC5) ... they perhaps were meant to lighten the day a bit. Anyway, people were exhausted from the previous stuff and awaiting Anthrax, so it was ok ... no one really was bothered.
