SOULFLY - Dark Ages Tour 2006
« Thread Started on Oct 20, 2005, 2:54pm »

The boys are getting on tour again ... I start receiving updates from http://www.getgo.de and http://www.getlive.co.uk/ ... Life is good ... Paulo / moby, you may expect me in London in February I think. ;D

getlive.co.uk

Celebrating the release of their 5th album, Dark Ages ultra-heavy Soulfly return to the UK stage in early 2006.

The music on Soulfly's previous albums Soulfly, Primitive, and 3, is fluid, experimental, and unpredictable, and it embraces and seeks change. For its fourth album, the blood-boiling, self-produced Prophecy, Soulfly and its leader Max Cavalera, the metal legend/visionary who cut his teeth as founding guitarist/vocalist for the groundbreaking band Sepultura, decided to change gears yet again. Backed by a completely new cast of musicians, Prophecy represents a fresher, newer, revitalized Soulfly.

"I decided to do something different on this album," Cavalera admits, going as far as to claim that Prophecy is the most exciting sonic journey he's embarked on since his Sepultura days. "This is an approach that I've wanted to do for a while. I never wanted Soulfly to be a band like Metallica, with the same four guys. On every Soulfly album, we've changed the line up and it will probably continue that way. In order to do that, I had to start from the inside out and bring in people who caught my attention, that I had never played with before, and create this."

That's a risky, gutsy move for Cavalera and Soulfly, but the biggest risks reap the most satisfying rewards, and that's best evidenced by Prophecy. He recruited Mark Rizzo, formerly of Ill Nino, to play guitar, rejoined forces with drummer Joe Nunez, who played drums on Primitive, and split Prophecy's bass duties between former Megadeth bassist Dave Ellefson and former Primer 55 bassist Bobby Burns. He chose Rizzo because of his range of ability, which veers from flamenco to heavy rock guitar. He chose Ellefson and Burns because he met them through his years on the road and respected their individual work/talent. While it might seem unusual to employ two people for one job as bassist on Prophecy, Cavalera insists that it gives the album distinct flavors. "The bass changes from song to song, and you can tell when it's Dave playing as opposed to Bobby, and that is what I wanted. Dave is old school Megadeth, which I love, and Bobby is new school. I like the old and the new together."

While Soulfly has always challenged their listeners' expectations, Prophecy also proved to be a challenge for Cavalera himself, who served not only as singer/guitarist, but also as the album's producer. "I am learning more in the studio and breaking down barriers. I don't want the same boring concepts. Who needs rules to make records? The best records are done without rules. If it comes from your heart, it'll be good."

Cavalera sees Prophecy - whose album title refers to the prophecy of change - which he recorded at the Salt Mine in Phoenix, as having two separate but equal halves. Cavalera has literally traveled the world to spice his past albums with world flavors. He has camped out at a castle in England. He has returned to his native Brazil. For Prophecy, he journeyed to Serbia to work with native musicians. He was inspired to do so after many trips to the country and experiencing the culture. "I spent a week in Serbia, and then experimented in the studio, and I'm happy with what came out of it. That's shaking the ground. Yes, the album has trademarks that the fans want. There are the hooks that people like to sing along to, more here than any other Soulfly album."

London - Astoria, Feb. 7, 2006

Quote:
Greetings from London !!!!!!!

Hey guys, this is just a quickie ... I will get back to all the posts incl. Yevgeny b-day when back at senses and a comp tomorrow (the e-cafe will close soon anyway)....

I cant hear I cant see (dehydration) ... But Geeeez .... the Soulfly gig was fantastic ...

First I was impressed by seeing people queuing 2 hours before the gig ... and mind you .... the queue went well over 5 blocks ... LMAO .. I will draw a detailed map when back at home + my drawing software !!!! Where all these people jammed at Astoria I do not know ...

The gig started with Skindred }never heard them before), that actually fitted well into the Soulfly gig (similarly to Betzefer supporting Soulfly last yeat in Germany).

They started and finished with stuff from Dark Ages and went through the greatest shit from those previous 4 albums .... as for Sepultura, just Roots and Refuse/Resist ... plus it sounded more like Soulfly (rather than Sepultura) anyway :D

... as for the setlist {save for Dark Ages stuff) ... Prophecy, Seek n Strike, Jump Da Fuck Up, Bleed, Eye for an Eye, Born Again Anarchist, Mars, Living Sacrifice, Execution Style, Defeat U, Primitive, Porrada ... and new stuff ... Babylon, I and I, Arise Again, Bleak (?] ..... For sure I left out something.

Oh yes Paulo ... I still have my voice but somehow perhaps due to the humidity of London air ... I actually managed to go loud ... LMAO ... I know most / all the bloody lyrics . :D

I took pix but since it was dark inside I am not sure about the results .... Tomorrow when back at home I will deal with it and post whatever came out reasonably well.

Good night and see you tomorrow !

And Paulo, thank you once more for making it to the airport and taking me to London !!! :-*

Pina - we must meet up soon .... and do some wild gig all together !!!!!!!! After very long time tonight I again felt like human being ;D .... Btw nice guys at Astoria + not a single person fell on my head this time ! 8-) Which means ... go London for metal gigs !

:D Born Again Anarchist salutes you ! :D

Oh well... here we proceed with the mini-report. I cam back from London late at night (yesterday) and today I got stuck with work matters, so only now I am able to proceed with some kind of report.

First of all, pix were taken, yet turned shit proper ... simply my camera is not good enough for indoor dark venues with smoke effects ::) ... but at least, as you can see below, there are shapes and figures and some colours, so at least you can get some taste of the friendly riot we had there. ;D

Lets start from the beginning .... Due to the workload in the office I was actually considering not going to London. ... The ticket and easyjet flight and hotel was pre-booked in October last year as soon as the getLive.co.uk alert hit my computer. I thought then: by February I will be stressed like shit, frustrated, pissed, overworked and Soulfly in London might provide so much needed relief, endorphin shot etc. ... So I booked everything in one day in order not to change my mind later (e.g. in result of work influx).

Which means, if I didnt book everything so early, I wouldnt go + on top of everything I would also miss Soulfly in Prague, for on Feb. 20 I am on business trip in Sevilla, which may sound cool, but it actually isnt, for I would rather be in Prague for Soulfly. >:(

But anyway, if I didnt book London, and also missed Soulfly in Prague, I would be even more stressed, pissed, frustrated etc ...

Meaning, it was a wise, good decision to book early and go ! 8-) :D

Easyjet flight went smoothly : i.e. save for 2 elderly chaps sitting next and behind me, hawking like hell and apparently not aware of existence of napkins and stuff, + a little kid that was constantly kicking back of my seat and shooting at by-passing planes - I rreally thought that planes shall be equipped with things like vacuum air pump to suck those little suckers off the plane ! ;D . But anyway, I understood the pilot' farewell words suggesting the passengers not to forget to take with them all their belongings, including their children. ;D

At this occasion I must again thank Paulo for meeting me at the airport and taking me to the hotel straight into the heart of the London congestion zone !!! Much appreciated + I really hope to see you (and Pina) in Prague for some wild gig to return the favours !!! :D (For instance Sepultura and In Flame on Easter Monday ? ::) )

To be cont.

As several times in the past I was staying at Regent Palace Hotel - Piccadilly: it is a convenient place if you need to be in the very centre (in this case walking distance from Astoria) and do not mind tourist places. The place is huge : I call it a human container for it has capacity to hold many hundreds of tourists. ;D Funny thing is that I always forget that this is a convenient place to rest your tired bones, as we use to say, but never to sleep. You ssimply cannot sleep in the middle of da noise. Also in this place / in the past i went through couple of late night (early morning) false fire alarms which always gave me a good 3 / 4 am shake . ;D There is a good thing about this place though, they have recently refurbished it so that each (?) room now has in-room facilities ... well, my room had inbuilt a plastic cabinet (of plane toilet size) that hold both WC and a shower. Just incredible ! ;D

But dont take me wrong, I would gladly stay there again for any kind of nearby gig - after all, if in London you are not exactly supposed to sleep, so what. :D

When I unpacked I went for light dinner and a book-shop tour (the hunt was actually a successful one : I got Sidwell's Reading Medieval Latin, and Latham's Revised Medieval Latin Word-List from British and Irish Sources With Supplement: but of course, you could think of much lighter stuff to carry to a Soulfly gig ::) ... on the other hand the guy at the till gave me a look of appreciation - he apparently didnt think punks can actually read ;D )

Around 6 PM and with heavy bag I proceeded towards Astoria ... I saw a queue so I tried to find its end ... it turned out to be a tricky pursuit .... by 7 pm the queue went roughly along some 5 blocks (follow the red dots):

I was not at the very end of it ... I stood right behind the corner of Soho sq. / park. Just behind me stood a group of people from Poland ... Soulfly must have actually pretty large tribe over there ... there were many Poles in Trinec open air last year, I also heard Polish in Berlin. 8-)

Regardless of the loooooooong queue it wasnt all that bad inside Astoria - save for crap of light: when I saw it I knew I would be in trouble (camera-wise).

People inside were overally a nice lot ... it is actually interesting to see how the audience changes from place to place. While e.g. in Chemnitz it was all very young people (mostly in their teens), here in London it was a mixture of up to 30, couple of older faces and by looks most people would fit into description of young alternative intellectuals. 8-) I had fun looking for toilets (along with others) for instance (btw. on the door there were something about law and non-unisex toilets, warning off the male clients .... but sure enough, after the gig the Ladies turned into a unisex place proper, and no one gave a shit as long as guys locked the dorrs behind them ;D I love tolerant gigs !).

The support started before 9 or so ... Skindred

I didnt know them before: they have one album out (Babylon) and they sound really great live !!! Hats off to Soulfly for being so good at choosing the right support ... last year in Germany it were Betzefer from Israel, for the UK it is these Skindred ... 8-)

Soulfly followed shortly after ... my outlined setlist (posted straight after the gig wuickly at an internetplace) was abour correct. This set list was posted at Soulfly forums http://www.soulflyweb.com/forum/ right here.
