I have translated a great interview that David did with a Portuguese newspaper. I'd like to thank BBS member Jonas for his revision and for making sure that I translated everything correctly. This translation is, in fact, a back translation (i.e. David's original words in English were translated into Portuguese and I translated them back into English). ;D Here is the article: I FEEL YOUNGER NOW THAN WHEN I WAS 30
At the age of 53, David Coverdale is back on the Portuguese stage, with his band Whitesnake. In his interview with Correio da manhã, the musician promised some surprises for his Wednesday show at Pavilhão Atlântico, talked about the importance of meditation and his passion for Port wine.
Correio da manhã – Whitesnake is back on stage. What is it like to be back on the road after such a prolonged absence?
David Coverdale – We are very excited. We are in top form and, to tell you the truth, I feel younger now than when I was 30, and I am 53 years old now. And I am very happy to be back in Portugal. This is going to be my first concert in Lisbon. In the past, I always played in Cascais.
- But Whitesnake does not have any new releases, i.e. there is no CD to support the tour. What will the concert be like?
- It’s going to be a Whitesnake show, with a few surprises. This time I am much more focused. Last year’s tour was more for fun, because it was the band’s 25th anniversary. But now it’s not. I am very satisfied with the band that I put together (see photo)*, I changed manager and I have received more invitations to play in Europe.
- It’s like a small revolution, a rebirth…
- It is… he (the manager) helped me immensely to balance my work and my role on stage. Because only working and not performing on stage does not make me happy. But I was also happy being in “retirement”, watching my son grow up and enjoying my marriage. But my wife is much more intuitive than I am and she noted that in my heart and soul, I needed to go back to work. And so last year, she gave me a lot of support. My marriage is a success.
- Going back to Whitesnake. What is the objective of the present tour?
- The joy of playing music. I needed to go back on the road. It’s important for people to know this… for them to know that I retired because I wasn’t happy with the state of show business. I still don’t like it, but I love making music and the most honest way for me to do this is to play live.
- I know that you have been practicing meditation for a while now. When did you discover this?
- About five years ago. I needed to find answers within myself on who I really was. It’s interesting, but the birth of my son brought back painful memories of my childhood. That’s when I was introduced to someone who helped me exorcise many inner demons. But at the same time, it was very purifying. I will always be grateful to my son for having given me this. His birth changed my life completely. I was a rock star for 30 years and when that’s the score, you can pretend to be anything you like [laughs]. Everyone around you says yes to everything, because they get loads of money for doing it.
- But is meditation important in your work? Did it make you change anything?
- Yes, quite a lot actually. It encourages me incredibly. Now I can only compose when I have completed my morning meditation. It’s extraordinary. When I’m done, I go straight to the piano or I pick up a guitar.
- And how many times a day do you meditate?
- Twice, 20 minutes each time. It’s very good, I can’t explain it, it gives me energy.
- And do you meditate before you go on stage?
- No. Only in the morning, after I wake up, and a few hours before the concerts. When I get ready to go on stage, only my assistant makes me sweat.
- And what will happen after the tour?
- Next year, a new double live CD will be released, with material from Whitesnake, Deep Purple and Coverdale/Page. Also in 2005, I will begin working on a new studio album.
- In conclusion, do you still enjoy white Port wine with 7Up?
- Ohhhh. It’s one of my favourite drinks. It helped me compose a great many good songs. But to be perfectly honest, when I decided to go back on the road, I quit drinking. But it’s true. It is one of my favourite summer drinks, with ice and lemon. And Americans are impressed by it. They have no idea how good it is.
