Toronto to get satisfaction of Stones concert
Last updated Tue, 24 Jun 2003 10:52:46
TORONTO - The Rolling Stones are coming to Toronto to help banish the SARS blues. The rock band will play a concert in Toronto on July 30.
The official announcement was made Tuesday morning. Tickets will go on sale Friday for $21.50.
The talent lineup also includes AC/DC, the Flaming Lips, Sam Roberts, the Guess Who, Justin Timberlake and Sass Jordan.
Ottawa will kick in more than $3 million to help finance the event.
Easing economic woes
The concert is meant to help Toronto's entertainment and tourism industries, which have been devastated because of tourists staying away over fears of severe acute respiratory syndrome.
Organizers hope to sell about 450,000 tickets and fill at least 95,000 hotel rooms in the Greater Toronto Area.
Toronto Member of Parliament Dennis Mills has been promoting the idea since May.
Mills is a longtime friend of the Stones' concert promoter.
Mills and Senator Jerry Grafstein have been working to assemble private and public money for the event, which will cost an estimated $11 million.
He said proceeds after expenses and $1 from each ticket sold will go to health care and hospitality workers.
The Stones, who will be paid for the performance, quickly agreed to the concert, despite the fact that they had cancelled a date in Shanghai over fears of SARS.

Rolling Stones shows paint it green LONDON (Reuters) - Wrinkly rockers the Rolling Stones are turning the British dates of their European tour into a hit for the environment with the planting of thousands of trees to offset the carbon dioxide emissions. The scheme, run by British-based firm Future Forests, calculates the emissions according to venue size, distance between concerts and travel to the events. It said it would take one tree to offset the emissions from 57 fans. Over the nine British dates, the Stones will perform to around 160,000 fans, meaning more than 2,800 trees will be planted in Scotland. Tour sponsor T-Mobile is footing the bill. Company spokesman Patrick Barrow said the scheme had the band's backing: "They are very much in favour of this." Dan Morrell, founder of Future Forests, said companies such as Barclays Bank and other bands including Coldplay and the Foo Fighters had also signed up to such "neutralising" schemes. "It's dealing with one of the world's single biggest problems, but not in a complaining, finger-wagging way. We're doing it in a way that makes people feel good about themselves."
