Okay I have decided to tell y'all about The Creation.. In the beginning there was nothing. No, not quite nothing. There was an endless space and a god called Allfather who was invisible and existed forever. He had 11 other names ranging from Spear-Shaker to Gelding to Ruler of Weather. he huge abyss of emptiness was caled Ginnungagap. Long before the Earth was created, there came to exist Yggdrasil, the World Tree, an ash that would link all of the 9 worlds..... The whole story is too long for here but that is how the world began for the Vikings...It does bear some resemblance to the Creation in the bible. The home of the gods was Asgard. It was built by Odin and the other gods and goddesses in the very early days. Mortals were unable to see this realm because the plain on which it was sied, Idawold floated far above the Earth. A roiver called Ifing separated Idawold from the rest of the worldits waters were distinguished by the fact that they never froze. However there was a link between our mortal Earth and Asgard - the magical bridge called Bifrost, which be equated with the rainbow: it's colors were born of fire, water and air. The Gods were able to use this bridge to travel up fromn and down to Midgard, the world of woman beings. One difficulty the gods faced was that their weight might shatter Bifrost: the god Thor therefor eschewed the bridge altogether, while others trod wearily. At the Midgard end of the bridge stood the god Heimdall clutching a horn: every time the gods entered or left Asgard, Heimdall would sound aquiet note on the instrument. When Ragnarok happens he'll sound a loud and savage blast to signify the end of the world. Asgard was furnished with several halls belonging to the major gods and goddesses. Freya's hall, for example was called Flkvang, Forseti's was Glitnir, Glasheim was one of Odin's halls, and was equipped with 12 thrones where the major gods sat in council. Another feature of Asgard was Hlidskialf, the great throne of Odin. From here the great god - or Frigga, because she was allowed to sit on Hlidskialf as well - could see everything that was happening in all of the worlds.

Sacrifice of Odin to Odin himself in his search for the secret wisdom of the dead:
I know that I hung On the windswept tree For nine whole nights, Pierced by the spear And given to Odin: Myself given to myself On that tree Whose roots No one knows.
They gave me not bread Nor drink from the horn; Into the depths I peered, I grasped the runes, Screaming I grasped them, And then fell back.

Good Morning fellow Vikings ...anyone catch that tv programme Vicky the Viking....errr , well that wasn't me!Time to mention Jormungand ( the greatest serpent, so my book says, but I would dispute that 'cos everyone knows that Whitesnake is the greatest serpent)who was thrown into the Midgard ocean by Odin. He grew so thick and so long (oooer) that he encircled the whole of the world and bit his own tail....OUCH!
