Why I love AC/DC - the issue of Family Jewels has given me the inspiration to waffle on a bit about AC/DC.
I was first aware of the band around the time of Bon's death when I was 15, some of the kids at school used to bring in tapes of Highway to Hell, but it wasn't really until about 3 or 4 years later I started buying albums. This gave me the chance to explore the Bon vs Brian thing, and personally as much as I love the Brian stuff (and have seen them live with Brian 3 times) I still much prefer the Bon era. Talking about videos now, I have seem most of the 80s and 90s stuff thanks to the advent of video / DVD jukeboxes in pubs, but I have not really seen much Bon stuff on video. I have only had satellite (cable) TV for a couple of years and the so called rock channels in the UK tend to focus on 'Nu', so the only video of Bon I have seen has come from the odd documentary on VH1 channel.
BUT - Family Jewels has ended this cultural droubt, and I can now see the man and the band at their absolute peak! Seeing them with Bon certainly takes the music to another dimension. For example Rock and Roll Damnation a song that I don't listen to a great deal, is now transformed by seeing them crank it out on the video. Malcom laying down a pounding rhythm, Angus cranking out the pounding riff, and Bon full of swagger truly living the song. Even down to the addition of a letter 's' on his hoodie, so it reads 'AC/DC (s) crew' beuatiful! Even my 4 year old daughter loves the song and bounces round the room whenever I put it on, in fact she has even taken to asking me to put it on!
Thanks to the band and the label for releasing these gems!
