Paulo and I went to see Joss Stone perform at Brixton Academy. She has an amazing, soulful voice that belies her young age (she's 17). However, her young age shows on stage. She needs several more years of experience to attain a mature stage persona but she's on her way. She giggled too much, screwed up one song and had to start over and gushed like a school girl about her boyfriend (well, she IS young and in love!) Most of the time, she didn't speak clearly or with enough confidence. But like I said, this girl has a serious future! I don't think I'll be buying any more of the CDs because her music is taking a pop, funky direction that I'm not too crazy about. But I love her first CD Soul Sessions, with all those classic covers and the first song "Right to be wrong" on her latest CD is amazing. It was performed really well on stage too. www.jossstone.co.ukwww.jossstone.com

The Alarm, one of my favourite bands from the 80's! I finally got to see them live 20 years later! Unfortunately, they played at The Marquee which is the crappiest venue ever! It only holds a few hundred people and only about 40 people or so can get a good view of the stage. Paulo and I tried to stay in front but people kept crowding us and I couldn't breathe so we moved to the back where I could at least breathe, but could not see much. Of course, that left me a prime target for the drunk men who felt they had the right to grab me and talk into my face! Bleh! As much as I enjoyed the band's performance, I could no longer stand to be there and we left halfway through the show. The good news is that it was being filmed for VH1 so it should be interesting to watch it when it airs. www.thealarm.com

Paulo and I had the rare opportunity to see the Durutti Column live at London's famous venue Ronnie Scott's. First of all, I was a real treat to be at THE Ronnie Scott's, the world famous jazz night club set in the heart of Soho. (http://www.ronniescotts.co.uk/). The atmosphere in there is incredible! Here's a photo from their website. It's an old photo but the place looks the same. In fact, Ronnie Scott's is celebrating its 45th anniversary this month. The Durutti Column have been around since the late seventies, when they emerged on the punk scene with the likes of Joy Division, etc. But their music evolved into something really quite original... like nothing I have ever heard before. Their music is beautiful and enigmatic. Vini Reilly is considered one of England's most distinctive guitar players and composers, and rightly so!. He is a guitar virtuoso in the true sense of the word. Wow! The drummer, Bruce Mitchell, blew me away! For me, it was music in its purest form. No flash, no gimmicks... just amazing sounds!! There really are no words to describe this kind of music... but at times I thought to myself "this is Moby meets Jimi Hendrix"! This sentence describes them perfectly: Bruce Mitchell's drumming style weaved an addictive rhythm around Vini's simultaneous guitar/piano playing and most of the audience were stunned at the way Reilly's thin, pale figure was able to coax such beautiful sounds out of the most minimal of equipment. More info on their website: www.column.freeuk.com/index.htmThe basic idea behind Durutti Column’s music is to break with whatever structure supports the foundations of musical formalism, in order to try and create a kind of music which really can belong to everyone.[/color]
