Tips for free and useful and real life-tested downloads for computers / Internet shall be posted here. 
I will start with an ANTIVIRUS program.
My top recommendation is AVG Antivirus : it exists in professional version for c. 50 - 60 USD (all updates after that are free and regular downloadable from their web).
Now it also exists in FREE version - all the protection functions are there, the only difference is that in simpler interface and in the fact that it is available in English only - but - who cares, right ?
Go to AVG home @ www.grisoft.com and then to FREE DOWNLOADS. Opt for the free version. (erm, there is also a trial version there)
Make sure that you update it regularly - again from the grisoft page. You can even sign in for virus-alerts so that you know when you have to update it !

JPG Converter
To make your images smaller for the web and / or to convert different graphic formats into jpg ... easy as hell lots of image files can be converted by few clicks !

EVRSoft offers a free editor called 1st Page 2000 that looks very good - I do not have personal experience as yet - it is only downloaded to my computer and I checked the users functions and it does look user friendly !
