I have searched endlessly for any background information on the story/meaning behind Soldier of Fortune. Does anyone know?? I'd be forever in debt! Thank you! ;D

When David began to answer the fans' questions in his website, my first question was about "Soldier..." and "Only my Soul". I think I printed his answer, I'm gonna try to find it tonight and I'll transcript it for you. I love this song!

Hey, hey, let's go! He wrote this in Mar 23, year: 2001: "Going into any kind of depth on the Board is really very hard for me to do...Typing is a complete pain in the derriere...(NOTE: I think he changed his opinion about this! ) "Only my Soul" is from my VERY "blue" period following my leaving Deep Purple... a time when no one seemed to know what to do with me... A very frustrating time...However, as a man who tries to turn negative to positive, it was an incredibly, fruitful time to write "blues" songs!...The "sad-eyed children of despair" line came from seeing so many spirit-broken people in a club in London called "Speakeasy"... People whose careers had seen better days...I resolved there and then never to be a "casualty" of the music business...(NOTE: thank, God, he got it! ;D))"Soldier of Fortune is simply about looking for love.. and afraid you're not gonna find it... A constant, recurring theme in my songs...It's only in the last couple of years I"ve realised that my emotional insecurity started in my childood...It's taken all these years for me to understand...but, hey...it gave me fuel for a 1000 songs!!! (NOTE: thank, God, again! ) Incidently, I thank the memory of my mother and father for doing the best they could...and, of course, I'm incredibly grateful I found Cindy...May all of you be so lucky in love...May God Bless you...DC" Hope this helps...it was the maximum that I could get from David about the songs that I love so much. As I always say, "Soldier..." is the song of my life - you know what I mean!

Rosangela,
This is fabulous! You are a walking "Coverdale" encyclopedia! You must have binders full of David's posts!

Dear Pina, this is my second favourite pastime (the first one, of course, is listening to the man!). But I need to put them in order, it took a lot of time to find this message. I need a secretary!
