As for the festival as such:
This year was my second time going to WFF, and most likely not the last time. It is unquestionably the best (and biggest) metal fest in Central Europe ... well, Czech Brutal Assault (
www.brutalassault.cz) is doing better and better, but BA has uncomparably smaller proportion than WFF.
The capacity of WFF takes up to 40.000 people + their cars, the average attendance is some 25.000. There are two stages and the tentstage goes c. to 5 AM.
Here are the line-ups:
For me the best gigs were (in chronological order):
Deadsoil (real discovery!),
Devildriver (I really wanted to see them live and they didnt fail me), Stone Sour (or rather I wanted to see them live, but at the end I wasnt exactly impressed ... tehy have a good drummer and guitar though), Madball (good old HC),
Soulfly and
Celtic Frost (my first time seeing them live – their performace was just superb !!!!!!). Then I went over to
Napalm Death and
Mystic Circle and died out ... i.e. went to gt some rest after a sleepless night on the bus (btw. in 4 nights I slept some 5 hours in total).
AOK were fun, but I really spent their bit in the metal market :-) ...
Raunchy, the Haunted, Heaven Shall Burn, Obituary ... all fine, but whom I really enjoyed were
Clawfinger – they just turned the field into real madness. And then „the thing“ were
Agnostic Front (they simply never fail) and to my surprise,
In Flames. I took them for rather a melodic and soft thing, but they know their business – they were simply brilliant and brought everyone „up to the air“ ... the experience was a bit close to a real punk gig, lol.
Anway, In Flames made me last till 4 am and go through
Volbeat ,
Synthetic Breed and Die Krupps. Especially Die Krupps were kind of re-discovery, for of course industrial was what we used to listen to in the 80s ... but anyway, at WFF they ranked easily among the heaviest things that played there.
It was a sleepy day for most of the part ... unfortunately I avoided the tentstage though it must have been better fun than mainstage, at least up to the Sick of It All ... Soilwork were replaced my Holy Moses ... but in general, it was a bit boring afternoon (plus in enormous heat). Btw. I cant understand what makes Bullet for My Valentine „big“ and present at many festivals ... maybe there is some hidden message I overlooked, but simply to me they are boring and uninteresting as shit (I felt similarly with e.g. Velvet Revolver, which is perhaps most pathetic bands there is).
Anyway,
Sick Of It All replaced Korn, and they were followed by
Motorhead ... Again, these two bands never fail you. The night was concluded by
Opeth (quite surprise – never saw them live before),
Graveworm (excellent combination of heavy stuff and visuals, and I really hope to see them somewhere again) and
Amorphis – a decent conclusion of WFF.
At 4am our bus was heading back for Prague to arrive there at c. 8 am in zombie condition. All in all, it was more than worth going, so that my next steps lead to
WACKEN and then
Wasted punk fest / Blackpool, which shall be also the last Wasted fest ....
