Sworn Enemy, 100 Demons, Broken Oath, Deal With It : Jilly's, Manchester August 15
Jilly's Rockworld / Music Box ... Manchester 15, 2006
After coming back from my short trip to the UK I was hoping to provide here a proper review, but given time restrictions / too much work, here are at least pix random notes / comments.
My main reason for going over to the UK was Wasted Punk Fest at Blackpool (the report is still under construction !!!! Esp. because I shot some 400 fking shots and am unable to sort them out, LOL) . However it was a coincidence that when at With Full Force festival earlier this summer, I was provided with Century Media promo CD featuring i.a. Sick of It All, Ignite, Sworn Enemy ... Sworn Enemy were actually what caught my ear ... esp. their brilliant guitar / drum work, as it were, with fantastic drive. So I went to check out their site and noticed a gig at Manchester just at the time I was planning to be still in the UK ... so instead of going to Lake District for a couple of days after the punk "mayham", I decided to hang around Manchester and go to Jillys ... One thing is that I always enjoy exploring local clubs / venues ... and Sworn Enemy definitely sounded as a good reason to go.
As a matter of fact, it was a very good decision. All four bands that were playing there that night were absolutely worth seeing !
Deal With It www.myspace.com/dealxwithxit are a hardcore band from Leeds area, with no album out as yet (only demos) - but you still may want to check their myspace site out ! At live gig their singer is difficult not to notice ... he combines an interesting combination / appearance of shyness and aggressiveness ... before you know it he may end up jumping on your back
Broken Oath www.myspace.com/brokenoath are hardcore/metal band from Glasgow. They have a one surprise "at store" four you, and it is a young lady as a singer : not too frequent occurance with hard core bands anyway (though more and more frequent with metal bands esp. from the continent). Btw. she is doing an excellent job, which you can tell just from the samples at their myspace site. I got their album but didnt find time as yet to give it a proper listen (Blood Cleanses the Streets released by Rucktion Records at www.rucktion.com ) ... btw. Lee: once more apologies for not having been able to deliver recent coins, LOL.
100 Demons : www.myspace.com/100demons hardcore/metal band from Connecticut. I heard or rather read about them, but this was again my first chance seeing them live. Absolutely worth checking out ... they tour with Sworn Enemy quite extensively this summer / fall and that means esp. people from "Central Europe (save for Czech Republic !) have a good chance to "catch them" along their tour. I got their first album, but again couldnt give it a proper listen yet ... It is on my short waiting list still.
Sworn Enemy www.myspace.com/swornenemy NYC / Queens based hardcore / metal band . I have their CD The Beginning of the End currently stuck in my CD player ... although the "Scared of the Unknown" can be labelled as the "ear catcher" (that was also the song included on the CM promo CD) there are many other songs on the CD that bears the same quality and if you enjoy forth-driving guitars and drums, dynamic vocal parts, that is what you get from the beginning to the end. It is fairly irrelevant whether this band is more hardcore or metal. They sound brilliant and both the CD and / or live gig can be more than recommended (btw. c. half of the gig' play list comes from the latest CD).
And my objections if any ? Too short ! The bands played between 25 - 50 minutes only But it was a very good gig as whole ... and Jillys is a pleasant place to visit, btw.
